Justice began his formal music training in 1991, when he played viola in the 5th grade. In the 6th grade, he switched to clarinet, but still he felt something missing and that the clarinet lacked a certain coolness and awesomeness. He began playing the saxophone in 1993 in 7th grade and finally he felt the awesome power that only the saxophone can bring to one’s musical voice. He played all through high school; earning seats in several regional honor bands, and excellent and superior ratings at both solo and ensemble contests. In 1998, his senior year of high school, under the expert tutelage of his saxophone teacher Linda Naylor, he earned a seat in the Oklahoma All-OMEA concert band (2nd chair tenor saxophone) and performed on stage at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center — where he would 10 years later be employed as the full time house sound technician.
He continued his studies in college as a saxophone performance major at the University of Tulsa with Linda Naylor and later at the University of Central Arkansas with Jackie Lamar. During his formal musical studies, Justice studied classical and jazz saxophone and excelled at the altissimo techniques. He toured with the TU Jazz Band in February 1999 and the TU Wind Symphony in March 2001 (on contra bass clarinet!). He also performed with the UCA Saxophone Quartet II at the Biennial NASA Conference at The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas in 2002.
Justice is a founding member and lead saxophone player of the Baha’i inspired world funk band E.G. Browne and the Band of Renown along with fellow Baha’i musicians and EGB co-founders Austin Turner (drums) and Warren Waren (guitar).
Justice has most recently played alto and tenor saxophone with the Once In A While Band, a charity and fundraiser band from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. OIAWB plays a mix of blues, oldies rock and R&B as well as original songs written by the band members.
Justice’s primary musical influences include the music of Percy Grainger, Gustav Holst, the saxophone literature of Bernard Heiden, and great saxophone players such as Eugene Rousseau, Lenny Picket, and Ron Holloway, as well as Dizzy Gillespie, the Count Basie Orchestra, Jimi Hendrix and Tower of Power. His broad musical aesthetic, solid education in music theory and history and experience as a performer have all contributed to his success as a sound engineer.
Justice plays Julius Keilwerth alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones exclusively; mouthpieces by Geoff Lawton and Eugene Rousseau, and Vandoren Java and V16 reeds. His alto saxophone an SX-90R purchased in the summer of 1999 in the now discontinued “clear-nickel” finish. His tenor saxophone is the SX-90R purchased in the fall of 2005 in the now discontinued solid nickel-silver finish. In the fall of 2019 he acquired an SX-90 soprano that was special ordered in the “clear-nickel” finish, and took over 10 months from the time that the order was placed until delivery in December 2019.
